No one likes waste. It doesn’t make business sense – our manufacturing lines need to run for longer to hit our operational targets and so resources are used unnecessarily. The reason we make products is to feed people, not animals or other waste management routes, this is why reducing waste is a focus for everyone at Westmill and we have a strong zero-to-landfill commitment.
Our Trafford site has managed to reduce noodle waste by 8% since 2011. We achieved this through cross functional working and the utilization of continuous improvement tools and techniques such as process standardisation and changes in ways of working as well as our engineering team implementing machinery improvements.
There is always more that we can do which is why each of our manufacturing sites have plans to deliver further step change improvements year on year enabling us to meet our ambitious 2022 waste reduction targets across the business.
