Our Sustainability Strategy is at the heart of everything we do here at Westmill. From the suppliers we source from, to looking after our people and minimising our wider impact on the environment.
As founding members of the Sustainable Rice Platform (SRP) we understand the importance of reducing the environmental and social impacts of rice farming. In Pakistan, since 2018, we have collaborated with over 1,000 farmers growing basmati rice. Training in sustainable farming methods has resulted in a 48% reduction in greenhouse gas emissions, a 30% decrease in water usage, an 9% increase in yields, and a 26% boost in farmer incomes. In Thailand, our project initiated in 2023 is now working with 800 farmers cultivating Thai Hommali rice. So far it has led to a 22% reduction in greenhouse gas emissions, a 56% cut in fertilizer use, and a 12% increase in incomes.
In May 2024, Westmill, in partnership with AB Mauri, launched a series of social and environmental initiatives to support turmeric farmers in Basargi, Maharashtra, India. The programme aims to enhance farmer livelihoods and deliver community-wide benefits by increasing yields, raising women’s annual incomes, and improving access to healthcare and safety.
Since the project started, 125 farmers have registered, with early results showing a 15% increase in yields and an average annual income increase of 9,960 rupees for women in the community, as of mid-2025.
Key initiatives in the first year include:
- Distribution of high-quality seeds for 30% of crop areas.
- Supply of personal protective equipment (PPE) to farmers and access to bi-annual medical camps for the wider community.
- Construction of a shared toilet facility in key public areas where people frequently gather for work and social activities.
- Distribution of 803 packs of sanitary pads to women in the village
In 2025, Westmill purchased 74 tonnes of turmeric from the project, representing 21% of the total turmeric purchased by the business.
As members of the Sustainable Spice Initiative, we are also committed to sourcing 50% of our top 3 spices sustainable by 2030 with current sustainable sourcing rates at 40% for turmeric, 56% for chilli & 28% for cumin.
