Lawrie started at Westmill in a Junior Development Technologist position as a Student on placement year while studying Nutritional Sciences at Manchester Metropolitan University. He shares with us how his work experience in food manufacturing with Westmill has set him in good stead for his future career.

“My year in industry gave me valuable experience in several areas of Food Manufacturing including recipe formulations, pilot trials, full factory trials, quality testing and tracking, record keeping of specifications and customer and supplier relations. Perhaps that most important thing I learnt is how a business operates day to day and how every employee plays a vital role. Having worked in several other areas of the food industry, my year working for Westmill cemented my aspirations of starting a career in Product development working for a Food manufacturer.

I applied for several roles in NPD positions with other businesses throughout my final year of study however after a few Job offers and tours of other manufacturers sites I came to realise that Westmill was one of the best businesses I had worked for and a benchmark for food manufacturing. Naturally, when I saw a job advert for a role as a development technologist at Westmill I jumped at the chance and applied straight away.

Over a year later having been successful in the role recruitment, I still love working at Westmill and continue to develop my skills in NPD and the wider business. Two of the major reasons for returning to Westmill are that the staff are extremely friendly, welcoming and helpful and you are given lots of opportunities to continually develop your skills through training courses and support from senior employees within the business”.
